Ben & Jerry’s Releases “Schweddy Balls” Ice Cream

Autumn officially starts a week from Friday, but temperatures were still in the 80′s in New York this week. So if you still need to cool off, try wrapping your mouth around some balls.

Ben & Jerry‘s has released a limited edition flavor in honor of Alec Baldwin, Ana Gasteyer, and Molly Shannon‘s infamous “Schweddy Balls” sketch on Saturday Night Live. In it, Baldwin plays a baker named Pete Schweddy who appears on a radio food show and brings his signature spherical baked goods, made from a secret family recipe. “No one can resist my Schweddy Balls,” he tells the hosts.

Fast forward twelve years or so, and Ben & Jerry’s decides to name a flavor after this comedy classic. Maybe they wanted to support fellow outspoken liberal Alec Baldwin; maybe they wanted to add another late night comedy flavor to their roster, which already includes Stephen Colbert‘s Americone Dream and Jimmy Fallon‘s Late Night Snack; or maybe they had already developed a flavor “loaded with fudge covered rum and milk chocolate malt balls,” and needed a way to market an ice cream with balls.

“The name is irreverent,” Ben & Jerry’s spokesman Sean Greenwood told Time. “But we’ve always been about having some irreverence and having some fun.”

Does this mean that we can expect Schweddy Weiner and Betty White‘s Giant Dusty Muffin ice cream soon?
